Stay safe browsing

Zac Voke - Tuesday, January 24, 2017

We understand that some visitors to the site will be concerned or even at risk for having visited the Separation Support website.  We've put together a very simple list of steps you can take to ensure your information stays safe and how to hide your internet activity.

Use another persons device

First things first!  If you feel that you maybe at risk as a result of your internet browsing we would always recommend that you use somebody else's desktop, tablet or mobile device.  Use a computer at your workplace, a local library, internet cafe or a friend or family members device.  Viewing sensitive information on the internet away from a partner or potential abuser will greatly reduce the risks.

Understanding how information is stored on the internet and how someone can access it.

All internet browsers store information as you take certain actions like entering searches into search engines or visiting web pages.  The typical information that is stored;

  • Search engine history and auto complete
  • Browsing history
  • Cookies
  • Images
  • Cached data

This information is stored on your computer or device and can be recalled very easily. It can however be manually cleared at anytime.

Check what browser you're using

Before you'll be able to begin removing information you'll need to know which internet browser you're using. If you're using a Apple computer the browser name will be displayed in the top left next to the Apple logo.

If you are using a Desktop PC and the browser name is not displayed in the browser bar at the top of your screen you can check by clicking Help on the top bar of your browser screen, this will then show a drop down with "your browsers name Help".

Delete browser history

To clear the browser history on an Apple computer;

  • Click "History" on the top bar of your browser
  • Click "Clear history" or "Clear recent history"
  • A pop up box will appear
  • Select from the drop down menu the time frame you want to delete "everything" or "all time" will get rid of all stored searches ever, you may want to just clear "Today" or "Last hour" for example.
  • Some browsers have an additional drop down menu to opt in to clear "Cookies", "Cache" and "Offline website data".   We recommend that these are cleared too, just click to tick these other options.

Delete search engine history

Search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing all keep a record of the specific search terms that you enter, they make life easier for you when you search the same thing often and the search engines can pre-empt what you might want to search for in the future.

This however might not be a good thing, especially if someone else has access to your computer or device who may notice or even check to see what search terms have been previously entered.

For more information on how to clear search history when you've been using the internet follow these links at Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Safest internet browsing advice

These steps can help you remain safer if you're worried about another party viewing your browsing history.  To ensure your internet usage remains completely hidden you should carefully consider finding information on the internet by using someone else's computer or device.

Before you'll be able to begin removing information you'll need to know which internet browser you're using. If you're using a Apple computer the browser name will be displayed in the top left next to the Apple logo.

One thing I would like to say is that often before purchasing more laptop memory, look into the machine directly into which it is installed. Should the machine is definitely running Windows XP, for instance, the actual memory limit is 3.25GB. Using more than this would purely constitute a new waste. Make sure one's mother board can handle the upgrade amount, as well. Interesting blog post.
